Soon-to-be Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban is rumored to be grooming one of Sheldon and Dr. Miriam Adelson’s sons to eventually run an NBA franchise.
Report by New York Post It suggests Cuban may be grooming Matan Adelson to one day manage the team in which his mother is buying a majority stake. A graduate of Stanford University, Mattan previously interned at Mavericks and Goldman Sachs. An anonymous source told the media that Matane will almost certainly be managed by the 30-year-old.
In a deal announced earlier this week, Miriam Adelson and her namesake fund will gain majority control of the Mavericks. The deal, which is expected to close by the end of this year, is unique in that Cuban will remain president of basketball operations while retaining a 20% stake in the team he acquired in early 2000.
Mattan and Adam Adelson are the children of the late Sheldon Adelson and Miriam. They both have children from previous marriages.
Mattan “Mamba Mentality”
In addition to his experience as an intern for the Mavericks, Matan Adelson has other relevant experience that could come in handy if he eventually runs operations for an NBA team.
Earlier this year, an investor group he leads committed $20 million to acquire a 90% stake in the Basketball Champions League’s (BCL) Bank Hapoel Yahav Jerusalem. Former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire was among the team’s previous owners.
I’ve been a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant in particular since I was young. “For me, Kobe embodied determination, an unparalleled work ethic and incredible determination,” Matan Adelson said in a statement announcing the sale. “As I grew up, I took a lot of inspiration from him, watching him strive to be the best version of himself, and through my leadership, I hope to bring that mentality to this club now and for years to come.”
Nearly half of Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem’s roster consists of American players, suggesting that Adelson has some experience working with an often demanding group of athletes.
Matan Adelson could have upside in the Mavs’ run
When Miriam Adelson takes control of the Mavericks, the team will enjoy the benefits of deep pockets — essential to keeping pace in an NBA where the salary cap is constantly rising and financial resources are vital in retaining and attracting stars.
Additionally, the Adelson family’s business experience could come in handy when it comes to navigating the NBA’s complex trade routes and salary caps.
For Mattan Adelson, his experience managing a foreign basketball team can be an added advantage because it exposes him to talent from outside the United States — many of whom eventually find their way onto NBA rosters. In fact, the Mavericks have been among the league’s biggest beneficiaries of European-born stars. German Dirk Nowitzki is the greatest player in the history of the league ever, and current star Luka Donjic – the Slovenian – is widely considered one of the best players in the league.
