Harry Reid Airport flights were delayed and canceled and low clouds are to blame

About 78 flights were canceled and 590 were delayed at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas as of mid-afternoon Monday due to turbulent weather conditions.

The weather at the airport was so dangerous that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a closure of the airport at 10 a.m. PT, according to Las Vegas television station KTNV. It was expected to end at noon Pacific time.

As of 3 p.m. Late in the day PT, the airport experienced departure delays lasting an average of 1 hour and 3 minutes, according to FlightAware, a national flight tracking service.

As for flights arriving at the airport, they were delayed an average of 1 hour and 9 minutes, FlightAware reported. Some flight delays at Harry Reid Airport extended for several hours.

Ground delays at the airport are also expected to continue until 11 p.m. PT on Monday, according to KTNV.

Blame the low clouds

The airport explained in a circular to passengers that the delay and cancellation were due to low clouds.

Airport officials also advised passengers and those driving them to and from the airport to “monitor your flight status with your airline.”

Light rain fell in Las Vegas as of 3 p.m. on Monday, according to the local weather forecast. The temperature was 52 degrees. Humidity was 90%.

Looking ahead to Monday evening, Las Vegas is expected to see more rain. In fact, the chance of rain was 100%, and it was expected to be heavy at times. Rainfall totals were scheduled to reach about a quarter inch or more.

Monday night’s low is expected to reach 49 degrees. Winds will be northeasterly at a speed of 5 to 10 knots per hour.

The weather on Tuesday is expected to witness more rain during the morning hours, and the rain will eventually subside. Skies will be overcast later in the day, and the temperature is expected to reach 55 degrees.

By Wednesday, Las Vegas will see partly cloudy conditions during the morning. The weather will turn cloudy in the afternoon. The maximum temperature will reach 59 degrees.

Flight delays and cancellations were seen Monday in many parts of the United States, not just Nevada, according to FlightAware. The total number of delays within, within or outside the United States as of mid-afternoon Monday was 4,468. Cancellations within, within or outside the United States totaled 895.

Among the most affected cities where flights were delayed or canceled are Chicago, St. Louis and Seattle.
